The origin of spittoons:

A spittoon , also known as a spittoon, is a container specifically designed to collect saliva or phlegm expelled during spitting. Spittoons are typically placed under dining tables in restaurants and can also be used to collect cigarette butts, food scraps, or even as a urinal for children in bedrooms. Smaller spittoons, about the size of an ashtray or ice bucket, are sometimes placed on tables. Traditional East Asian spittoons are characterized by a small mouth and a large belly, and are made of materials such as porcelain, copper, lacquered wood, enamel, and jade.

The spittoon was invented for hygiene reasons. In the past, people would spit anywhere, which was very unhygienic. The spittoon reduced this habit, improving hygiene. It was used to hold excrement and small trash like fruit peels. The spittoon had a lid, called a spittoon lid.
